Located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, between Europe and North America, the Azores made up of 9 islands, develops parallel to Lisbon with the latitudes of 39''43 '/ 36''55'N. Pico Island is the second-largest and most ventral of the archipelago.
Developing around the 2351-meter-high, volcano, which gives it its name, the island of Pico has an oblong shape - 42 km long and 15.2 wide - and a total surface area of 447 km2. It is the highest point in Portugal.
Striking in its landscape, it is the basalt black that gives color to the island: from the ground to the coast, passing through mazes of black corrals. And it is in this scenario that the man from Pico tried and managed to produce the wine that marked and re-marked the economy and society of the island.
All the culture and legacy around the vineyard and wine is recognized worldwide in 2004: the Protected Landscape of Regional Interest of Vineyard Culture, by recognition and classification by UNESCO, has been elevated to World Heritage status.
